Your Prototyper, explained in plain English.

A Prototyper turns the research, road map and mock-ups into something customers can click, try and react to. Using tools such as Figma and AI app builders such as Lovable, they build just enough to validate the idea, not the whole product.

No tech background needed. This guide explains the role in plain English: what it is, when you need it, what to expect and how to choose the right Volunteer.

What does a Prototyper do for you?

“

Think of a show home.

Before building the whole estate, the developer builds one show home so buyers can walk around it and say what they like. A prototype lets customers experience your idea before you build it.

1

Makes the idea real

Something customers can click and try.

2

Tests quickly

Feedback in days, not months.

3

Saves the build budget

Problems found before any production code is written.

When you need one

Signs it is time to bring one in.

If two or more of these sound familiar, add this role to your validation team.

Bring one in when

  • ✓Customers struggle to picture your idea from a description
  • ✓You want feedback before paying for development
  • ✓You need something to show investors
  • ✓Your mock-ups are ready but nobody has tried them
  • ✓You want to compare two different approaches

You can wait if

  • …You do not yet know which problem and customer to focus on
What they own

Four areas a Prototyper takes off your plate.

01

Clickable prototype

A realistic prototype in Figma or an AI app builder.

02

Test scenarios

The key tasks customers try during testing.

03

Feedback sessions

Testing with early adopters and recording what happens.

04

Recommendations

What to keep, change or drop before the build.

What to expect

Across a 60 Volunteer day term.

Volunteers give up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, over three months or more. Daily and weekly updates keep you informed, and rapid feedback from you in the first two weeks makes the biggest difference.

1
✦

Weeks 1 and 2

Reviews the road map and mock-ups and agrees with you what the prototype must show.

2
▤

By mid term

A first clickable prototype tested with a few early adopters.

3
★

By day 60

A refined prototype, feedback findings and recommendations for the Product team.

Choosing the right Volunteer

What to ask, and what to look for.

You do not need to be an expert to recruit well. Use these questions at interview and listen for the signs below.

Questions to ask

  • ?What would you prototype first, and why?
  • ?Which tools would you use, and why those?
  • ?How do you test a prototype with customers?
  • ?How do you stop a prototype turning into a full build?

Good signs

  • ✓Focuses on the riskiest assumptions
  • ✓Tests with real users quickly
  • ✓Knows when to stop

Red flags

  • ✕Wants to build production code at this stage
  • ✕Spends weeks polishing visuals
  • ✕Never tests with customers
Your part as a Tech Founder

Give them this, and they deliver from Day 1.

  • ✓The road map, mock-ups and specification
  • ✓Introductions to early adopters for testing
  • ✓Accounts for prototyping tools in your company's name
  • ✓Clear limits: a prototype, not the full product
  • ✓A signed Volunteer Agreement before they start
FAQ

Questions Tech Founders ask.

Can I launch the prototype as my product? +
Usually not. A prototype is built to learn quickly, not to be secure or scale. Use it to validate, then build properly with your Product team.
AI tools can build an app in minutes. Why do I need a Prototyper? +
Speed is not proof. A Prototyper decides what to test, builds it around your research and runs the sessions that tell you whether customers want it.
Who owns the prototype? +
Your company. Keep tool accounts in your company's name and sign the Volunteer Agreement before anyone starts.
How much does it cost to recruit this role? +
Volunteers give their time for experience, not pay. You subscribe to the Idea plan at £49 a month or £490 a year, which lets you recruit up to 15 Volunteer team members across every validation role. See the Idea plan.
