Your Customer Development, explained in plain English.

A Customer Development analyst is a Business Analyst who turns research into real people. They find and segment early customers, build relationships with those who will collaborate closely and test whether some will commit, or even pre-pay, before you build.

No tech background needed. This guide explains the role in plain English: what it is, when you need it, what to expect and how to choose the right Volunteer.

What does a Customer Development analyst do for you?

“

Think of a restaurant running a tasting evening.

Before opening, the owner invites real diners, listens to what they love and takes early bookings. By opening night there is already a queue, and the menu has been tested.

1

Finds real people

Early customers who feel the problem, not only survey numbers.

2

Groups them

Cohorts by need, so you never design for just one group.

3

Tests commitment

Who will collaborate closely, sign up early or even pre-pay.

When you need one

Signs it is time to bring one in.

If two or more of these sound familiar, add this role to your validation team.

Bring one in when

  • ✓Your research is all numbers and no names
  • ✓You do not have ten people you could call about your product
  • ✓You want early adopters ready before launch
  • ✓You want evidence that people will pay
  • ✓You are designing for one customer type without knowing it

You can wait if

  • …You have not yet confirmed who has the problem (start with Problem Analysis)
What they own

Four areas a Customer Development analyst takes off your plate.

01

Customer cohorts

Groups of early customers, segmented by need and fit.

02

Early adopter relationships

People ready to give feedback and test prototypes.

03

Commitment tests

Sign ups, letters of intent or pre-payments before you build.

04

Customer insight

What each cohort needs, shared with the Product Roadmap analyst.

What to expect

Across a 60 Volunteer day term.

Volunteers give up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, over three months or more. Daily and weekly updates keep you informed, and rapid feedback from you in the first two weeks makes the biggest difference.

✦

Weeks 1 and 2

Reviews the research, agrees the target cohorts with you and starts reaching out to potential customers.

2
▤

By mid term

A growing list of engaged early customers and the first interviews summarised.

3
★

By day 60

Defined cohorts, a group of early adopters ready to test the prototype and evidence of commitment.

Choosing the right Volunteer

What to ask, and what to look for.

You do not need to be an expert to recruit well. Use these questions at interview and listen for the signs below.

Questions to ask

  • ?How would you find our first 20 potential customers?
  • ?How do you get honest feedback rather than polite praise?
  • ?How would you test whether someone will pay?
  • ?How would you group the customers you find?

Good signs

  • ✓Comfortable speaking directly with people
  • ✓Keeps clear records of every conversation
  • ✓Looks for commitment, not compliments

Red flags

  • ✕Relies only on social media likes
  • ✕Promises features to get sign ups
  • ✕Does not keep records
Your part as a Tech Founder

Give them this, and they deliver from Day 1.

  • ✓The problem analysis and persona
  • ✓Approval to contact people on behalf of your startup
  • ✓Any incentive you can offer early adopters
  • ✓A simple way to record contacts and conversations
  • ✓A signed Volunteer Agreement before they start
FAQ

Questions Tech Founders ask.

Why would anyone pay before the product exists? +
Some customers feel the problem so strongly that they will commit early in return for a discount or influence over the product. Even a few is powerful evidence.
Is this the same as sales? +
No. Customer Development is about learning and testing commitment. Selling at scale comes later, in the Go-To-Market stage.
How many early customers do I need? +
Enough to see a pattern within each cohort. A small group of engaged early adopters is worth more than a long list of passive sign ups.
How much does it cost to recruit this role? +
Volunteers give their time for experience, not pay. You subscribe to the Idea plan at £49 a month or £490 a year, which lets you recruit up to 15 Volunteer team members across every validation role. See the Idea plan.
