Your Validation Team Leader, explained in plain English.

A Validation Team Leader runs the validation of your idea for you. They assemble the team, agree the plan and timeline, keep everyone focused and deliver a final validation report with a prototype, so you can decide with evidence whether to build.

No tech background needed. This guide explains the role in plain English: what it is, when you need it, what to expect and how to choose the right Volunteer.

What does a Validation Team Leader do for you?

“

Think of an expedition leader.

You chose the mountain. The expedition leader plans the route, organises the team, checks progress each day and brings everyone back with a clear answer: can it be climbed, and how?

1

Runs the validation for you

A plan, a timeline and a team that sticks to it.

2

Keeps you informed

Regular progress reports without you chasing anyone.

3

Delivers a clear answer

A final validation report and prototype to base your decision on.

When you need one

Signs it is time to bring one in.

If two or more of these sound familiar, add this role to your validation team.

Bring one in when

  • ✓You have an idea but little time to test it properly
  • ✓You have several analysts and nobody coordinating them
  • ✓Research keeps starting but never reaches a conclusion
  • ✓You need a clear go or no go decision by a date
  • ✓You want to show investors structured evidence

You can wait if

  • …You have the time and experience to coordinate validation yourself
  • …You only need one analyst for a narrow question
What they own

Four areas a Validation Team Leader takes off your plate.

01

Team and plan

Recruiting the validation team, agreeing tasks and the timeline.

02

Coordination

The link between you and the team, keeping everyone focused.

03

Briefing the team

Training everyone on the idea, the customer and the approach.

04

Validation report

The final report, prototype included, with a recommendation.

What to expect

Across a 60 Volunteer day term.

Volunteers give up to three hours a day, Monday to Friday, over three months or more. Daily and weekly updates keep you informed, and rapid feedback from you in the first two weeks makes the biggest difference.

By mid term

Research underway across problem, competitors and customers, with weekly progress reports.

By day 60

A final validation report with evidence, a prototype and a clear recommendation on what to do next.

Choosing the right Volunteer

What to ask, and what to look for.

You do not need to be an expert to recruit well. Use these questions at interview and listen for the signs below.

Questions to ask

  • ?How would you plan the validation of my idea over 60 Volunteer days?
  • ?How will you keep me updated without taking up my whole day?
  • ?Tell me about a project where the answer was no. How did you handle it?
  • ?What would be in your final report?

Good signs

  • ✓Talks about evidence and decisions, not activity
  • ✓Has led or coordinated a team before
  • ✓Comfortable telling you the idea may need to change

Red flags

  • ✕Promises the idea will succeed
  • ✕No structure or timeline in their answers
  • ✕Wants to start building before testing
Your part as a Tech Founder

Give them this, and they deliver from Day 1.

  • ✓A clear description of the idea and the problem it solves
  • ✓What you need to know to decide whether to build
  • ✓Your deadline and any budget for tools or incentives
  • ✓A weekly 30 minute review
  • ✓A signed Volunteer Agreement before they start
FAQ

Questions Tech Founders ask.

Do I still make the decision? +
Yes. The Validation Team Leader gathers the evidence and makes a recommendation. You decide whether to build, change direction or stop.
Is this the same as a Product Manager? +
Not quite. A Validation Team Leader tests whether the idea is worth building. A Product Manager leads the build once it is.
What if validation says no? +
That is a good result. You have saved months and money, and you can use what you learned to adjust the idea and test again.
How much does it cost to recruit this role? +
Volunteers give their time for experience, not pay. You subscribe to the Idea plan at £49 a month or £490 a year, which lets you recruit up to 15 Volunteer team members across every validation role. See the Idea plan.
